Day 106 Turkey 2/1/2011, Fethiye–Kemer–Eşen–Free camp near Xanthos. 36.43miles/59.46km, 3hr32minutes, Av 10.3mph.

Back on the road today, slightly later than we had planned. It is always hard to say goodbye to a guest-house when you know you are going to be camping later.

Riding out of Fethiye we had forgotten how long the town goes on for, 6km later and we were finally back on the main road.

For the first time in a week or so it is actually quite chilly with heavy cloud cover and dare I say it, the chance of rain. Shorts may not have been the best idea this morning!

With beautiful snow capped mountains in front of us we made good progress along the road. For the time being we have left the really steep hills behind, although the road did gently climb for about 20km until we reached the town of Kemer.

Near the archaeological site of Tios we received an offer of çay and duly accepted. Unfortunately our lack of Turkish and our hosts non existent English made for a rather difficult experience. Nevertheless they seemed happy we had accepted and they had a very warm stove to sit round.

We were hoping to find a restaurant for lunch today, but we appear to be on one of those stretches of road ill served by garages, shops and places to eat. Instead we had to settle for bread and honey on the side of the road. When a garage eventually came into view we stocked up on water and set off to look for somewhere to camp.

A spot came up not a moment too soon, as the rain that had been threatening all day finally started. We are quite close to a stream which is nice and unfortunately visible from the road which is not so nice. The only interested parties seem to be tractor drivers though and they just seem curious, so we should be fine.

Let's hope it stops raining, because cooking dinner isn't going to be much fun!
