We woke to the rather ominous sign of snow on the ground! The strong winds that had started the night before had if anything increased in intensity. Right now it really feels as if we are in a totally different country to the one we have been travelling through for the last few days. Fortunately our room is amply supplied with blankets because it is very cold and the high winds have been causing power cuts. Our only source of heat is an air con unit which obviously needs electricity.
Any ideas of going to look at the ruins of Assos, were quickly quashed by the freezing walk across the courtyard to get breakfast. Fortunately the guest-house's breakfast was good and the çay was plentiful.
After hiding out in our room for most of the morning I decided we should try and see a bit of the ruins. We donned all of the warm clothes we had and set off up the hill.
Reaching the entrance it seemed deserted so we carried on through the gate, only to be called back by a security guard. Having paid our 5 lira each (£2) we continued on to the site. I would love to say that we had a good look round, but the conditions turned out to be so dangerous that we had no choice but to abandon. We managed to get halfway up towards the view point and main ruin, when there became a very real chance of being blown off the top. Only by crouching down and shuffling along the ground did we make it back down. We have never experienced anything like it in our lives. I can honestly say that it was extremely frightening. Thank goodness we weren't cycling today.
Back in the relative safety of the village, we stocked up on what meagre food supplies were on offer and headed back to the warmth of our room.
We are pleased to say that for now the wind has dropped a little and we may be able to move on tomorrow. If we wake to the same as this morning however, we will have no choice but to stay another night, unless we can arrange a lift out of the village.
We hope that this is just a combination of our altitude and a freak storm. Not the shape of things to come through Turkey.
Sorry no photos today!
