Today may have been slightly shorter than yesterday, but it made up for it by being the most relentlessly hilly day we have had for a while. That said, it may have been because our colds are still hanging in there.
Having left in good time, we set off into a cloudy cooler day and immediately began the climbing. The wind may have been thankfully in our favour, but progress was hard to come by. Pretty bleak scenery and an increasingly busy road, as we near Cape Town, didn't help matters.
Fortunately two turns of event picked us up and helped us on our way. Firstly a couple in a Land Rover had seen us on the road and had stopped at the top of a hill to give us a cold drink of juice each. It was just what we needed and it helped buoy our spirits no end.
Secondly, the dull barren scenery gave way to a much more dramatic, mountain backed vista as we neared our destination. I won't say that we flew up the last few hills, but they were dispatched with a little more speed.
Finding the backpackers was very straightforward and we were soon camped in the garden. Currently it is quite overcast, so we are out of the sun, but we aren't confident about remaining in shade come morning. Our respective illnesses have made us decide to stay put tomorrow before we ride down to Cape Agulhas, the most southerly tip of Africa.
With no food available to us, we had to ride the bikes once again this afternoon. The supermarket wasn't too far away, but it was nice to lock the bikes up and forget about them for a while. It has been a tough couple of days!
