Day 428 South Africa 04/01/2012, Fish River Mouth – Cannon Rocks Resort. 43.39miles/70.53km, 4hr36minutes, Av 9.4mph.

We dragged ourselves away from Fish River Mouth this morning and bid a fond farewell to Larry and Sharon. Thankfully they had arranged an overcast, pretty much wind free day for us to cycle in.

The road we were riding on is quieter than the N2, but unfortunately the lack of hard shoulder makes it a slightly unpleasant ride. Especially when in several places, there is nowhere to get off the road. Most of the drivers gave us as much space as they could, but having the trucks bearing down on you isn't too much fun.

Having cycled through Port Alfred, we stopped at a large shopping mall to get some supplies. While Debs shopped I was kept entertained by several curious passers-by. This certainly seems like a very friendly part of South Africa; long may it continue!

Heading onwards towards Kenton-on-sea, we bypassed our first place to stay and carried on towards Cannon Rocks. We have elected to take a stretch of dirt road, rather than stay on the tar. Larry recommended the route as being very nice, so fingers crossed we won't end up bogged down in sand, stuck on any rutty steep climbs and generally cursing his name!

Arriving at the resort we got checked in to, what is by the price, the Rolls Royce of camp-sites. Our tent looks a little small in its slot, surrounded by caravans and large family size tents. It seems a nice enough place though and the fellow campers have been very friendly. We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow, so it will be an early and alcohol free night.

As it turned out it even if we wanted a drink, the shop had closed early, the bar/restaurant never opened and all of the water from the taps was salt water. Having tried four different barrels, we found some rain water that hadn't gone stagnant so we have enough for tomorrow. We obviously could have bought some water, but as I already mentioned the shop closed early and wasn't opening again until long after we planned to leave. None of which explains why we were charged £25 for a camping pitch!
