After a well needed rest we headed down to breakfast and introduced ourselves to Dennis. He had been told by Debbie's friend Steph that we would be coming and asked us to join him for a coffee. While we chatted he asked us if we wanted to go and see his lighthouse camp-site with the option to stay for a day or two. We had originally planned to go to Tofo beach as Barra, where the camp-site is situated involved a ride down a sand road. Insisting that we come and have a look, Dennis told us to leave the bikes locked up at the hostel and he would drive us to Barra. From that moment on any plans we had went pretty much out the window.
The camp-site is beautifully situated atop a cliff, overlooking a wide sandy beach. Dennis himself, lives in the old restored lighthouse of the camp-sites name. We have been shown terrific hospitality by Dennis, fed, watered, shown round and taken care of by an extremely friendly genuine guy.
Aside from swimming in the warm Indian ocean, we have walked along the beach to Tofo, watched the Rugby (at the very nice Casa Barry lodge), had a lovely day celebrating Debs birthday (34!) and swam with whale sharks.
The swimming with whale sharks was supposed to be on Debs birthday but it clashed with the rugby (I know terrible of me, but I had Debs permission!). It would have been a wonderful experience if poor Debs hadn't been so terribly seasick. We went out on a mid-sized speedboat in fairly rough seas and the constant lurching and rocking sadly finished her off. Fortunately she held it together and we got to swim alongside one of the enormous, gliding sharks. It was a very memorable experience which has brilliantly rounded up a great time in Barra. We have also met some lovely people and I should just say safe travels to Yaser and Zafrana and to Niels and his family, it was a pleasure to meet you and thanks for the lift!
We will be moving on tomorrow, with a view to arrive in Maputo within the week. We have about another 500km to go and with a bit of luck it looks like finding supplies and accommodation along the way should be easier.
I must just add a huge thank you to Dennis for being such a gracious host.
