In truth we probably didn't need a day off today, but we are psyching ourselves up to what is a very steep climb towards the Swazi border. Being quite chilly here, meant that we had a lovely late morning in the tent disturbed only by the staff and a road crew, who are staying here, shouting to each other at 7am. It is good to see that black South Africans are no different from their neighbours, in their inability to consider that other people may still be sleeping! I had this recently explained to me. Apparently in the black African culture, it is rude to whisper or speak quietly as that implies that you are trying to hide something. This is fine, it would just be nice if they decided to have their open, non-sneaky conversations elsewhere!
Finally getting up, we had a slow wander into town. Starting at the museum, we didn't go in, Debs hasn't got over her museum phobia, we stopped to have a look at a jewellery workshop. Fortunately the leaflet we had picked up gave us some information, as if it was just left to the staff/jewellers, you may as well cross out the work bit and just call it a shop! A little disappointed but with all our money still in our wallets, we followed the well signposted heritage walk round the town. It was nice to see the old corrugated buildings that date from the late 1800's and the walk was very pleasant. A particular highlight had to be the amazing original kerb stones dating from the 1800's :)!
Having had a pleasant stroll we stopped at the Victorian tea rooms for a light lunch and then returned to the camp. The rest of the day may well be spent wrapped in our sleeping bags, as it is quite frankly freezing!
